Why 316 (not 304) for marine and coastal wire mesh

Marine corrosion is dominated by chloride. The single most important specification for any marine wire mesh procurement is choosing 316 / 316L over 304. The four mechanisms below decide grade, surface finish and welding fabrication.

Chloride pitting

Salt-laden air, splash zone and immersion expose stainless to chloride pitting. 316 with 2-3 percent molybdenum resists pitting to 25-30 years where 304 fails in 5-10.

Crevice corrosion

Frame joints, weld seams and bolt holes hold trapped salt. 316L (low-carbon) resists welded crevice corrosion; 304 welds fail at heat-affected zones in 3-7 years.

Stress corrosion cracking

Cyclic load + chloride + temperature triggers SCC. 316L is the international marine default; duplex 2205 supplied for high-stress / high-temperature locations.

Surface passivation

Pickled and passivated finish removes free iron and weld scale, restoring chromium-rich oxide layer. Required step for marine deployment, supplied in house.

Why is 316 stainless required for marine wire mesh, not 304?

316 contains 2-3 percent molybdenum which dramatically improves resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. 304 lacks molybdenum and fails in 3-10 years in salt spray, splash zone or immersion. For any salt exposure (harbor, pier, pool, coastal), 316 or 316L is mandatory; we will not recommend 304 for confirmed marine use.

What is the difference between 316 and 316L for marine welded panels?

316L has reduced carbon (under 0.03 percent vs 0.08 percent for 316). For welded fabrications (frames, hooked-edge, U-edge, panel welding), 316L resists weld-zone sensitization and crevice corrosion; the heat-affected zone stays passive. For roll mesh without welded fabrication, 316 is sufficient. Default: 316L for any framed marine panel, 316 for plain mesh roll.

When is duplex stainless (2205 / 2507) needed instead of 316L?

Duplex stainless is needed for: 1) submerged offshore platform mesh under cyclic stress, 2) desalination brine and chloride concentration above 1000 ppm, 3) operating temperature above 60 celsius with chloride exposure, 4) high-stress fall protection on offshore rigs. For atmospheric coastal, splash-zone walkway and aquaculture cages, 316L is sufficient and more cost effective.

Do you supply salt-spray test report (ASTM B117)?

Yes. Salt-spray (ASTM B117 / ISO 9227) test report is supplied on request for marine procurement. Standard 316 stainless welded mesh from our line passes 720+ hours without red rust. Custom test duration (1000 / 2000 hours) can be arranged with an accredited third-party lab; lead time 2-4 weeks.

What surface finishes are best for marine and coastal stainless mesh?

Pickled and passivated finish is the marine baseline; it removes free iron and weld scale, restoring the chromium-rich oxide passive layer. Electro-polished finish is the highest grade, used for offshore platforms and pharmaceutical seawater systems. Brushed and polished finish is acceptable for architectural coastal use. Mill (as-welded) finish is not recommended for marine.

What documents and certifications are supplied for marine orders?

Mill test certificate (MTC) traceable to wire batch number is supplied by default. ASTM B117 salt-spray test report on request. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV or ABS welcome and arranged before B/L. Container loading photos sent before B/L issuance.
