Welded Mesh Opening Size Selection Guide (304 / 316 / Galvanized)
A practical guide for engineers and buyers choosing the right welded wire mesh opening size, wire diameter and material grade for filtration, guarding, fencing, agriculture and concrete reinforcement. Figures reflect our standard production range; custom sizes are available.
1. How to choose welded mesh opening size
Opening size (the clear distance between adjacent wires) drives both function and open area. Smaller openings retain finer material and add rigidity at a given wire diameter; larger openings increase open area and reduce weight and cost. Match the opening to the smallest object you must retain or exclude, then confirm wire diameter for the required strength.
2. Standard opening sizes and typical uses
| Opening Size | Typical Use | Open Area | Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) opening | Standard fine mesh, popular for filter housing, animal cage, food sieve. | 60-65% | Filter / cage / sieve |
| 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) opening | Common general purpose, equipment guard, BBQ rack, light fence. | 70-72% | Guard / fence / rack |
| 1 inch (25.4 mm) opening | Architectural, agricultural, light industrial mesh, balcony screen. | 78-82% | Architectural / agriculture |
| 2 inch (50.8 mm) opening | Heavy fence, agricultural, livestock enclosure, road safety. | 85-88% | Heavy fence / livestock |
| 3 inch (76.2 mm) opening | Concrete reinforcement, heavy livestock fence, large-span guard. | 88-90% | Reinforcement / heavy fence |
| 4 inch (100 mm) opening | Concrete slab, road, bridge reinforcement; framed with rebar. | 90-92% | Concrete reinforcement |
Custom opening sizes between and beyond these standard steps are available. Send your retained-particle size or clear-opening requirement and we will recommend a stock-friendly specification.
3. Material grade and wire diameter selection
| Material | Wire Diameter | Service Life | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| 304 stainless | 0.5-4 mm | 15-25 years | Filter, food, kitchen, light corrosion outdoor / indoor |
| 304L stainless | 0.5-3 mm | 15-25 years | Welded panels needing low-carbon for stress-corrosion resistance |
| 316 stainless | 0.5-4 mm | 20-30 years | Marine, chemical, coastal, pool, pharmaceutical |
| 316L stainless | 0.5-3 mm | 25-30 years | Welded fabrications in chloride / acidic environments |
| Galvanized welded | 0.5-6 mm | 10-20 years | Cost-effective outdoor screens, construction reinforcement, fencing |
For marine, chemical or coastal exposure choose 316 / 316L. For general indoor or light outdoor use 304 / 304L. Where budget is the priority and corrosion is mild, galvanized welded mesh is most cost-effective. See our 304 vs 316 vs 316L selection guide.
4. Roll vs panel and edge finishing
Fine openings are usually supplied in rolls; heavier openings are commonly supplied as flat welded panels for fencing, reinforcement and guarding. Cut-to-size panels with finished edges are available to your drawing. Full product page: stainless steel welded mesh.
Frequently Asked Questions
We produce standard openings from about 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) up to 4 inch (100 mm), plus custom openings on request to match your filtration, guarding, fencing or reinforcement need.
For a given wire diameter, a larger opening increases open area (from roughly 60-65% at 1/4 inch up to about 90-92% at 4 inch), which lowers weight and cost but reduces fineness and rigidity.
Use 304/304L for general indoor and light outdoor service, 316/316L for marine, chemical and coastal exposure, and galvanized for cost-sensitive mild-corrosion outdoor use.
Yes. We cut welded mesh into rectangular panels with finished edges according to your drawing and opening specification.
